NAIL BITING FINISH AS CLIPPER RACE STORMS INTO CAPE TOWN

Derry~Londonderry~Doire was second across the line in the Stormhoek Race to the Cape of Storms

Only ten minutes separated Derry~Londonderry~Doire from GREAT Britain at the finish line in a high speed battle across 3,400 nautical miles from Brazil to South Africa in the second leg of the 14-race global series that forms the 40,000 nM Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. This leg across the South Atlantic Ocean is the Stormhoek Race to the Cape of Storms and conditions didn’t disappoint, pushing the fleet on in a fast and furious crossing with some record speeds in excess of 30 knots, with the front runners averaging a credible 10 knots across the entire 14 day dash from Rio de Janeiro to Cape Town.

All Hands on Deck for Round Ireland

Skippers and crew members taking part in the Round Ireland Sailability event are busy getting their boats ready for their passage. On June 26, three yachts will leave Greencastle with owners and crew heading east to circumnavigate Ireland to raise awareness of sailing for persons with disabilities. They will be joined by another yacht at Carlingford. The skippers and their crew members are full steam ahead with their preparations.

F18 World Championships Round-Up

Ballyholme Yacht Club woke up to champagne conditions on the first day of the F18 World Championship.

As the fleet took to the water however the wind began to drop and swing around, providing a challenge for the race committee. After a delay of 3 hours and a general recall, the race finally got underway with a black flag to keep the eager competitors away from the line.

Derry~Londonderry~Doire celebrates Clipper Race victory in nail biting finish

Derry~Londonderry~Doire has won Race 14 from New York to Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland in the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Yacht Race.

The course was shortened with a time limit placed on the race of 1200 UTC Sunday 22 June after unusual weather patterns caused by a persistent high pressure system centred just west of Ireland threatened to hamper the progress of the fleet.

Ken’s boat-building in a class of its own

There aren’t too many people who can say they have sailed - indeed raced - a boat they have built themselves.

Ken Doherty is certainly an exception to the rule as he builds a type of boat that is unique to local waters in Lough Foyle – the Foyle Class Punt.

A member of Lough Foyle Yacht Club, Ken has had a lifelong interest in boat-building and sailing. A number of his hand-crafted sailing punts will be taking part in the Lough Foyle Yacht Club Punt Race during the LegenDerry Maritime Festival which is taking place in Derry~Londonderry from June 21~29.

Derry~Londonderry~Doire arrived in New York, the city that never sleeps in the early hours of this morning lit up by world famous city skyline. The Northern Irish team put on a competitive performance to claim fifth place in Race 13, the Grange Hotels Trophy, just one week ahead of the highly anticipated Race 14 to Derry-Londonderry.
