Wednesday, June 18. 2008SEA BANGOR ATTRACTS VISITORSThe Sea Bangor sailing event hosted by Ballyholme and Royal Ulster Yacht Clubs attracted sailors to BYC from England, Dublin and Cork. The Swords contingent of multihull sailors came up to the Club and enjoyed the hospitality along with a couple of sailors from Cork. What a weekend of hard racing! Everybody who was on the water over the weekend went home on Sunday night with tired and broken bodies! The crews on the Ribs and committee boats were just as tired as the crews in the dinghies and keelboats after an arduous weekend’s racing. The BYC windreader provided by BDO Windex kept a log for the past weekend. The wind peaked at 16.30 (Saturday) at 23 knots but was otherwise a placid 20 knots throughout most of Saturday and a mere 17 knots on Sunday. Either the windex needs recalibrating or we’re all just getting old. Probably the latter!
The multihull fleet were hosting their Northern Championships with 12 boats taking part. Racing for the top slot was very tight with Richard Swanston and Adrian Allen going into the last race neck and neck/. It was the old timers Elaine and David Taylor who robbed them of a race win, and Adrian managed to keep Swannie behind him for all three boats to finish neck and neck. Pete and Dee McDowell were fourth overall with a very happy Dave Anderson and Neil Holland in fifth place. First visitor was Simon O’Gorman in sixth place crewed by a keen and versatile Hayley Simms who was sailing a Hurricane for the first time. Andrew Henry dominated the Topper fleet with three firsts and Kathryn Law ventured out on Sunday and won the handicap fleet with two firsts in her Laser 4.7. Jonathan Cully hung onto Andrew’s shirt tails to finish second with Sandra Halliwell third Topper. We3ll done to all the young topper sailors who battled it out in tough conditions. The Laser Radial fleet welcomed some new faces to the fleet. Colm McLarnon sailing ‘Colly Clogs’ switched between fleets and managed to win race three, but Jonathan Henry had an impressive string of first places to win the Radial fleet. Second was Brian Bibby and another well done to Christina Cunningham who competed in her first major regatta. All in all some fantastic sailing in testing conditons – check out http://www.ballyholme.com/ for the results. Thanks to all the committee boat and rescue crews who looked after the sailors so well.
